Transmedia
Performance – Week One
First thing we went through in our first lesson was the etiquette necessary for our Performance Workshop:
· * Being punctual for class so the
lessons can start immediately
· * Being reliable
· * Being professional about the way we
interact with each other
· * Leave personal issues at the door
· *Be respectful of one another and each
other’s ideas
We were then split up into groups and given research tasks to carry out on Frankenstein and Edgar Allan Poe. I chose to take it upon myself to do research on Edgar Allan Poe as I was already familiar with his work. I like his dark style approach to poetry as it makes the reader feel on edge and this is what i want to try and achieve with the piece us as a group wish to put together. Most people only know him for his work "The Raven" but the this quote from him is which most intrigues me and is highly relevant to the piece we wish to create;
"Science has not yet taught us if madness is or is not the sublimity of the intelligence"
The meaning of which I believe plays on the idea that ‘madness’ has not been defined as our destruction of intelligence or the glory of our highest use of intelligence. Consider that those we consider mad who have done some of the most evil things, but at the same time others considered mad have achieved some of greatest developments of our time. This is relevant to the story of Frankenstein as he created what was a great development for his time but also was complete madness which is also very relevant to our current modern day monster technology which is also man made.
After we came back and each person from the group said what they had researched I could see how all these ideas could start forming a piece. It was also interesting to see how different people’s minds interpreted the same story (Frankenstein) in different ways so coming up with ideas for the play would be very interesting and unusual with the versatility in our groups imaginations.
My second lesson was a big slide show on transmedia and also
the different camera angles used and their effects on the audience viewer
watching. My understanding of transmedia after this lesson still wasn’t clear. It
seemed to me that transmedia was too forced, I couldn’t really see how we could
manage to incorporate this into a play which really flowed and in which the
meaning and overall narrative was kept and transmedia mixed in naturally. To be
honest I really wasn’t looking forward trying to incorporate transmedia into a
performance as I really didn’t see how on earth it was going to work. As for
seeing the different camera angles and how they had an impact on certain
situations so that their meaning could be changed was very interesting and I thought
that this could come in very usual if we decided to use a piece of transmedia
which was a pre-recording as we now had the knowledge to know what camera
angles to use to get the desired effect that we wanted. love you baby.
